So, who’s behind this genius idea? Meet Esther Garcilita and Marco Sotomayor, a power couple of journalists who’ve been obsessed with cats for years. They’re basically the ultimate cat parents, with seven furry felines ruling their home! 👑
For almost 15 years, they’ve been dreaming of a space where people could learn about cats and have a blast doing it. And now, their dream is finally a reality! Esther says it’s for “cat lovers, curious people, or anyone who just wants to know more about the feline world. It’s for people who want an incredible and interactive experience.” Sounds like us! 🙋♀️
From “La Gatería” to Global Sensation! 🌟
This wasn’t an overnight sensation, folks! The journey to the Cat Museum started way back when Esther and Marco launched a business selling cat-themed goodies. They thought it would be super niche, but nope! Cats are a HUGE deal, and their business exploded! 💥
Then came “La Gatería,” a super cool cat cafe in Roma where you could sip coffee and chill with adorable rescue cats. But it wasn’t just about the coffee; it was a mission! They helped hundreds of adult cats find their forever homes. How amazing is that?! 😭
But life threw some curveballs. The 2017 earthquake and then the pandemic forced them to close. BUT! They took courses, learned about museum design, and assembled a dream team. The goal? A fun space that also teaches you everything you need to know about having a cat. Originally, Marco had ideas for NINE rooms, but they settled on a three-room pop-up for a year. If it’s a hit, they want to take it GLOBAL! 🌎
