Mexico City Continues Reconstruction Efforts Nine Years After 2017 Earthquake

Mexico City, September 16, 2026 – Nine years after the devastating September 19, 2017 earthquake, over 1,600 homes in Mexico City remain in need of reconstruction or rehabilitation. This ongoing effort highlights the critical importance of structural inspections in both new construction projects and existing buildings.

According to data from the Mexico City government’s Reconstruction Portal, out of more than 22,000 registered damaged homes, 1,664 are still pending completion. This represents approximately 7.52% of the total affected properties.

Progress and Remaining Challenges

As of September 2026, the Mexico City government has successfully completed the reconstruction or rehabilitation of 20,477 homes, encompassing both multi-family and single-family residences. However, the remaining 1,664 properties are divided into two categories: 1,439 homes are currently under construction, while 225 projects are yet to begin. These outstanding projects are managed by the INVI (Mexico City Housing Institute) and the Commission for Reconstruction (CRCM).

The initial census of damaged homes was conducted in 2018, with additional properties added in 2019 following new assessments and expert opinions. The total number of affected homes registered in the database stands at 22,141, comprising 11,153 multi-family units and 10,988 single-family homes. Each of these represents a unique story of loss and resilience for its inhabitants.

The Importance of Structural Integrity

The prolonged reconstruction process underscores the vital role of thorough structural inspections. Experts emphasize that robust inspection protocols are crucial not only for new constructions but also for regularly assessing the integrity of existing infrastructure, especially in earthquake-prone regions like Mexico City.

For those interested in a more detailed overview of the reconstruction efforts, the official Reconstruction Portal of Mexico City provides comprehensive information and updates on the progress.

The 2017 earthquake left a lasting impact on Mexico City, prompting a massive and sustained effort to rebuild and restore communities. While significant progress has been made, the remaining work serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced and the ongoing commitment required to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
