Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – May 26, 2026 – The National Action Party (PAN) caucus in the Chihuahua State Congress is committed to resuming legislative sessions in Ciudad Juárez, following the abrupt suspension of a session on Tuesday due to protests. José Alfredo Chávez, coordinator of the PAN caucus, stated that important resolutions for Ciudad Juárez were scheduled for approval, underscoring the border city’s priority status for the local Congress, especially for his party.

Legislative Session Interrupted by Protests

The session, intended to address critical issues for the region, was disrupted when demonstrators, advocating for the legalization of same-sex marriage, attempted to forcibly enter the auditorium where the proceedings were taking place. Chávez expressed his regret over the incident, noting that in his four years as a local legislator, he had never witnessed such a situation. He emphasized the PAN’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful approaches.

PAN Affirms Commitment to Dialogue and Peace

Chávez clarified that the groups involved in Tuesday’s protest, which sought to forcefully occupy the legislative venue, do not represent the LGBTQI+ community. He described the community as peaceful individuals who consistently seek dialogue. Regarding the absence of the same-sex marriage issue from the day’s agenda, Chávez explained that the commission president had the right not to include it. He added that discussions are ongoing among caucuses to bring the matter forward, but stressed that it cannot be imposed through violence.

Condemnation of Violence and Support for Colleagues

After the attempted forced entry by protesters, the PAN caucus decided to withdraw from the venue. Chávez lamented the situation, expressing his respect and support for his Morena colleagues. He highlighted the respectful relationship maintained in the plenum, where dialogue is constant, and disagreements can be robust without resorting to violence.

Future Legislative Action and Related Developments

In related news, the Morena caucus announced their intention to seek approval for same-sex marriage legislation next Thursday, claiming sufficient support for the initiative. Meanwhile, the local PAN caucus coordinator questioned the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) summons to the governor, labeling it as evidence of political persecution and suggesting the governor should be detained and presented before a District Judge instead of merely being summoned.

PAN legislators also released a video stating, “Protest yes; disrupt sessions no,” criticizing actions that alter legislative proceedings and advocating for political differences to be resolved through institutional channels. The session’s abrupt suspension was reportedly accompanied by a scuffle, during which Deputy Jael Argüelles was allegedly assaulted.

This incident underscores heightened political tensions and the ongoing debate surrounding social issues in Chihuahua. The PAN’s commitment to returning to Ciudad Juárez signals their intent to prioritize local concerns despite the recent disruptions.
