Deputy Proposes Protocols for Medical Emergencies in Mexico City Schools
Mexico City, September 29 – Deputy Iliana Ivón Sánchez Chávez of the Morena parliamentary group has proposed reforms to the Mexico City Education Law to establish clear medical protocols for accidents, emergencies, and medical urgencies in schools. The initiative aims to provide school staff with a defined course of action for identifying emergencies, activating appropriate care services, notifying parents or guardians promptly, and providing institutional follow-up to incidents.
Preventing Improvisation in School Emergencies
The proposal, presented during the ordinary session of the Mexico City Congress on September 22, seeks to amend Article 117 of the Mexico City Education Law. This amendment addresses various situations such as falls, blows, choking incidents, allergic reactions, and convulsive crises that may occur during school hours. Sánchez Chávez emphasized the need for a pre-established course of action in school emergencies to protect the integrity and lives of students.
The legislator clarified that the initiative does not intend to replace professional healthcare but rather to establish mechanisms for timely recognition of risk situations, requesting specialized help, and avoiding inappropriate interventions. The proposed protocols are expected to include, at a minimum, procedures for identifying the emergency, immediately activating corresponding care services, communicating the incident to mothers, fathers, or guardians, and documenting and providing institutional follow-up to the case.
The proposal also stipulates that these actions must be carried out in accordance with the powers of the competent authorities and with the available human, material, and budgetary resources.
Key Aspects of the Proposed Protocols:
- Identification of Emergency: Clear guidelines for recognizing various medical emergencies.
- Activation of Services: Procedures for promptly engaging relevant medical and emergency services.
- Parental Notification: Requirements for timely communication with parents or guardians.
- Institutional Follow-up: Mechanisms for recording and tracking incidents to ensure proper care and accountability.
This initiative comes amidst growing concerns about student safety and the need for standardized responses to medical incidents within educational institutions. The aim is to create a safer environment for students and provide clarity for school staff during critical moments.
The proposal will now undergo further review and discussion within the Mexico City Congress. If approved, it could significantly enhance the safety and well-being of students across the city’s educational system.
