Public Transport Bus Crash in Mexico City Leaves 40 Injured; Driver Almost Lynched
Mexico City, April 3, 2026 – A public transport bus accident on Good Friday in the Álvaro Obregón borough of Mexico City resulted in at least 40 injured passengers. The incident, which occurred on Rómulo O’Farrill Avenue, also saw angry passengers attempt to lynch the driver.
The crash happened when the bus, reportedly full of standing passengers, lost control and slammed into a structure on a median strip in the Progreso neighborhood. Emergency services, including elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), firefighters, and Civil Protection of Mexico City, quickly responded to the scene to attend to the injured.
Driver Accused of Negligence and Recklessness
Passengers told authorities that the accident was caused by the driver’s inattention and excessive speed. According to their accounts, the driver was “playing and eating” while talking to two other individuals onboard. After the bus crashed into a wooden house, allegedly inhabited by a homeless person, the driver’s companions fled the scene.
“It was super full of people, he was playing, he was eating, he was with two other guys, we don’t know where they went, they escaped with the bus money,” said Ms. Saturnina, an affected passenger, to N+.
The incident sparked outrage among the passengers, who reportedly assaulted the driver with the intention of lynching him, believing he had endangered their lives by his reckless behavior behind the wheel. Authorities intervened, securing the driver, who will be presented before the Public Ministry to determine his legal situation.
“I ask that please do not release him, that he be kept detained and if he has to go to jail, that he pays because I am sure he was even drugged,” another passenger stated.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation
Due to the high number of injuries, prompt medical attention was provided to all affected individuals. The specific details of their injuries have not yet been released, but the sheer volume of casualties underscores the severity of the collision.
The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is ongoing. Authorities will be reviewing the evidence and passenger testimonies to determine the full extent of the driver’s culpability and any other contributing factors to the crash.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding public transport safety and driver accountability in Mexico City. Passengers’ frustration, culminating in the attempted lynching, reflects a broader demand for safer and more responsible public transportation services.
