Mexico City, March 18 – Intense rain and strong winds lashed Mexico City on Tuesday, March 17, causing significant disruption. The severe weather led to numerous fallen trees and the collapse of a large billboard onto the Second Floor of Periférico Sur in the Tlalpan borough, severely impacting vehicular circulation in the area.

Emergency Response and Traffic Disruptions

Following the incident, elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) immediately implemented traffic cuts on Periférico Sur and Picacho Ajusco highway, specifically in the Fuentes del Pedregal neighborhood, Tlalpan borough. These measures were crucial to manage the situation and prevent further accidents.

Police officers from Mexico City were tasked with collecting and removing the fallen billboard canvas from the Second Floor. The canvas was rolled up and placed on the median strip while awaiting additional support for its complete removal, as reported by the SSC on its official social media channels.

Widespread Tree Falls Across the City

The Heroic Fire Department reported multiple tree falls across several boroughs, including Benito Juárez, Iztapalapa, Venustiano Carranza, and Tlalpan. These incidents further complicated mobility throughout the capital.

  • One tree, approximately 20 meters tall, uprooted completely and had to be removed from Laboratorista Street in the U.H. Benito Juárez neighborhood, Iztapalapa borough.
  • Another tree, about 15 meters long, fell in the Ampliación Nápoles neighborhood, Benito Juárez borough.

Yellow Alert Activated for Strong Rains and Hail

The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) updated the Yellow Alert for persistent heavy rains, strong wind gusts, and potential hail in all Mexico City boroughs. The alert was in effect until 10:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17.

The SGIRPC’s latest report predicted rainfall between 15 and 29 millimeters (mm) and hail until 10:00 PM on Tuesday, March 17.

Safety Recommendations Issued by Authorities

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the SGIRPC issued a series of recommendations for residents:

  • Carry an umbrella or raincoat.
  • Use collected rainwater for plants.
  • Sweep storm drains and keep them free of trash or obstructing objects.
  • Avoid pouring grease down drains.
  • Do not travel on roads with puddles or floods.
  • Drive with caution, as debris from trees or other objects may be present on roads.
  • Stay away from walls, trees, power lines, and billboards that appear to be at risk of falling.

Past Incidents and Future Outlook

This event highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather. Mexico City has experienced similar incidents in the past, underscoring the importance of preparedness and rapid response from emergency services.

The city authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and urge residents to remain vigilant and follow official recommendations to ensure their safety during periods of severe weather.
