Ciudad Juarez, August 25, 2026 – Telephone extortion remains one of the most prevalent crimes in Ciudad Juarez, with criminals constantly innovating their methods to ensnare new victims and illicit financial gains. This warning comes from the Municipal Public Security Secretary, who highlighted the sophisticated nature of these ongoing scams.

Evolving Tactics of Telephone Extortionists

According to the Secretary, perpetrators of these telephone frauds are relentless in their pursuit of new strategies. “Every day they invent something new,” he stated, emphasizing the dynamic and unpredictable nature of these criminal operations. The goal is always to stay one step ahead of law enforcement and the public.

The range of deceptive tactics employed by these criminals is broad and designed to exploit various vulnerabilities. These include:

  • Simulated Kidnappings: Callers falsely claim a family member has been abducted, demanding ransom.
  • Bogus Prizes: Victims are informed they have won a substantial prize, but must pay a fee or provide personal financial details to claim it.
  • Unclaimed Packages: Individuals receive calls about undeliverable packages, requiring personal information or payment for delivery.
  • Financial Deception: Scammers pose as bank representatives, reporting supposed failures or maintenance issues with credit or debit cards, or even phone lines, to extract sensitive data.

These methods are designed to create a sense of urgency, fear, or excitement, pressuring victims into making hasty decisions without proper verification.

SSPM’s Proactive Measures and Public Awareness Campaign

The Municipal Public Security Secretary affirmed that the department is actively combating these crimes. “We are working very hard with the intelligence division of the Municipal Public Security Secretariat to carry out, above all, information, so that people do not get fooled, do not get surprised by these telephone criminals,” he explained.

A key focus of the SSPM’s strategy is public education. By disseminating information about common scam tactics, authorities aim to empower residents to recognize and resist these fraudulent attempts. The objective is to keep the public informed and vigilant, creating a barrier against the criminals’ evolving schemes.

Despite the persistent evolution of these deceptive practices, the SSPM asserts its commitment to staying ahead. “We have been moving a step ahead of them,” the Secretary noted, indicating ongoing efforts to anticipate and counteract new scam methodologies through intelligence gathering and public outreach.

The Importance of Vigilance and Verification

Authorities urge all residents of Ciudad Juarez to exercise extreme caution when receiving unsolicited calls, especially those that involve urgent requests for money, personal information, or financial details. Key recommendations include:

  • Verify Information: Always independently verify any claims made by callers, especially those involving emergencies, prizes, or financial accounts. Contact the relevant institution or individual directly using official contact information.
  • Do Not Share Personal Data: Never provide sensitive personal or financial information (such as bank account numbers, PINs, or credit card details) over the phone to unverified callers.
  • Report Suspicious Calls: Report any suspicious calls to the local police or relevant authorities immediately. This helps law enforcement track patterns and warn the community.
  • Educate Family Members: Share information about these scams with family and friends, particularly the elderly, who are often targeted.

The ongoing battle against telephone extortion requires a collaborative effort between law enforcement and an informed, vigilant public. By understanding the tactics employed by criminals and taking proactive steps, residents can significantly reduce their risk of becoming victims.
