Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Three Tourists in Guerrero Lagoon

Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero – Three tourists from Mexico City lost their lives by drowning in El Camalote Lagoon, located in the town of El Cayaco, part of the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez, in the Costa Grande region of Guerrero. The incident occurred after the small boat, known as a ‘panga,’ in which they were traveling, overturned. A fourth individual, reportedly a local resident, survived the accident.

According to police reports, the incident was first reported on Tuesday when four men were said to be traveling in a panga that subsequently capsized for unknown reasons. One of the occupants managed to swim to shore and alert authorities, prompting a search operation by Civil Protection and Public Security personnel from Coyuca de Benítez.

Search and Recovery Efforts

The search efforts continued into Wednesday morning. At approximately 2:00 AM, the body of a 33-year-old man identified as Gustavo “N”, a local resident, was recovered. Authorities confirmed that the tourists were on vacation in the municipality at the time of the tragedy.

By Wednesday morning, shortly before 9:00 AM, the bodies of the two remaining missing men were found. They were identified as Julio “N”, 43, and Daniel “N”, 37, both tourists and residents of Mexico City.

Investigation Underway

Personnel from the Attorney General’s Office visited the homes of the deceased to conduct the necessary legal proceedings. Family members transported the bodies to their residences but reportedly did not permit authorities to take photographs at the scene, as indicated in the police report.

The exact cause of the boat overturning remains under investigation. The incident has cast a somber shadow over the popular tourist destination in Guerrero.

Community and Tourism Impact

This tragic event occurs as Guerrero begins the year with excellent hotel occupancy rates, highlighting the region’s appeal as a tourist destination. However, incidents like this underscore the importance of safety measures for visitors engaging in water activities.

Local authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses, aiming to determine the circumstances that led to this unfortunate loss of life.
