Massive Tire Dump in Ciudad Juárez Engulfed in Flames Again; Arson Suspected
Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – A massive tire storage site in Ciudad Juárez caught fire again early Tuesday, August 4, sending thick black smoke visible from El Paso, Texas. This incident marks the second blaze at the same location within three weeks, leading officials to suspect arson as the cause.
Vandals Suspected in Repeated Incidents
For the second time, the used-tire storage site, located adjacent to the municipal landfill, is believed to have been targeted by vandals. Hundreds of discarded tires were ignited, prompting a significant response from local emergency services, including firefighters, municipal police, and Civil Protection officials.
Emergency operators received the initial report shortly before 2 a.m. after landfill employees alerted authorities to the fire. More than 20 firefighters, supported by three fire engines and two water tanker trucks, were dispatched to battle the blaze. The facility, which stores over 300,000 used tires, is a critical component of the city’s waste management infrastructure.
Coordinated Response to Contain the Blaze
Firefighters and municipal police worked diligently to remove large stacks of tires from the burning area, aiming to prevent the flames from spreading further throughout the extensive storage site. Civil Protection Director Sergio Rodríguez and Fire Chief Jorge Ignacio Puentes arrived on the scene to coordinate the firefighting operations, emphasizing the severity and potential environmental impact of the incident.
Rodríguez noted that the fire once again produced a dense plume of black smoke that drifted over southern Juárez, raising immediate concerns about air quality for residents in nearby communities. The repeated nature of these fires highlights a persistent challenge for local authorities.
Investigation Underway, No Arrests Made
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with either fire. The cause of the latest blaze remains under investigation, but officials strongly believe it was intentionally set. The lack of arrests has fueled public concern and calls for increased security measures at the site.
The extent of the damage from this latest fire has not yet been estimated. The previous fire, which occurred approximately three weeks prior, also required a large-scale emergency response and caused significant disruption.
