Tren Suburbano to Integrate CDMX Mobility Card for AIFA Route, Simplifying Commuter Travel
Mexico City, April 25, 2026 – Commuters traveling between Mexico City and the State of Mexico on the Tren Suburbano will soon experience a significant change in their daily routine. With the upcoming opening of the Tren Suburbano’s new route to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), plans are underway to incorporate the Integrated Mobility Card (Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada) of Mexico City (CDMX) as a payment option. This initiative aims to streamline payment methods and enhance convenience for passengers.
A Single Card for Seamless Travel
Currently, many daily commuters using the Tren Suburbano often need to carry multiple transportation cards. The integration with the CDMX Integrated Mobility Card, already used across the Metro, Metrobús, Tren Ligero, RTP, Trolebús, and Ecobici, will eliminate this inconvenience. The objective is to establish a single, unified payment system across various modes of public transport in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Friday, April 24, that efforts are in progress to integrate the “Felipe Ángeles” Tren Suburbano into CDMX’s Integrated Mobility System. When questioned about the possibility of a single mobility card for all transportation in the Valley of Mexico, the President stated, “Yes, the goal is for there to be only one card; we have to talk with the State of Mexico, but the Government of Mexico will use this card for everything that leaves the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.”
Sheinbaum also noted that the Integrated Mobility Card is already in use on the Tren El Insurgente, which connects CDMX with the State of Mexico, running from Observatorio to Toluca. She acknowledged that harmonizing mobility cards would take some time, explaining, “It takes time, because it had another card, and now that the (train) Felipe Ángeles is already of the people of Mexico, the objective is that there is only one card, that it does not have this minimum balance.”
New Public Operation and Promotional Fares
Beyond the payment system integration, a significant change for the Tren Suburbano is its transition to government operation. The Government of Mexico announced that the Tren Suburbano will no longer be privately operated and will be entirely managed by the federal government under its new name: Tren Felipe Ángeles. This shift means the federal government will be responsible for controlling and operating the transport system, moving it from a private concession to a fully public project. The Fondo Nacional de Infraestructura (Fonadin) will now operate the train, with a focus on improving service. The State will also assume the Tren Suburbano’s financial commitments as part of the restructuring following the acquisition.
The official inauguration date for the Tren Suburbano to AIFA is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2026. This new branch will connect Mexico City with AIFA in approximately 40 to 43 minutes, extending 23.7 kilometers with six stations and one terminal.
During its first month of operation, the Tren Suburbano to AIFA will offer promotional fares. Jorge Mendoza, director of Banobras, indicated that these prices would be more accessible than other transport options. The current fares for the Buenavista to Cuautitlán route will remain at $11.50 for short distances and $26.50 for long distances. For the new AIFA section, the promotional fares will be $11.50 for intermediate stops and $45.00 for the complete journey to AIFA from the city. After this promotional period, official fares will be determined and published by the government.
Timeline for Integration
President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that the full integration of the mobility card “will take a few months,” but she assured that it is a definite plan: “Yes, it will be done.” This integration is expected to significantly improve the daily commute experience for thousands of residents in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, offering a more unified and convenient public transportation system.
