Mexico City Congress Approves Creation of Sports Secretariat
Mexico City, May 15 – The Mexico City Congress has approved the creation of the Secretariat of Sport, an initiative put forth by Mayor Clara Brugada Molina. This decision, made in a joint committee meeting yesterday, aims to ensure the right to sport is fully guaranteed for all citizens in the capital.
The proposal from the Mayor received unanimous approval from the United Commissions of Normativity, Studies and Parliamentary Practices, and Local Public Administration, during a virtual Second Extraordinary Session. Deputy Víctor Hugo Lobo Rodríguez highlighted that the resolution was enriched by contributions from all parliamentary groups.
“This is a strategic tool for health, addiction prevention, social fabric reconstruction, and the comprehensive development of individuals. The creation of this Secretariat of Sport will provide a guiding institution to coordinate, design, and strengthen public policies in sports, promoting everything from community sports and physical activation to formative sports,” Lobo Rodríguez stated.
To facilitate the establishment of this new dependency, various provisions of the Organic Law of the Executive Power and Public Administration of Mexico City were reformed and added. Deputy Mario Enrique Sánchez Flores emphasized that the new secretariat will bring significant benefits not only to those regularly involved in sports but also to children, adolescents, young people, and families.
Sánchez Flores expressed confidence that the Secretariat of Sport will foster discipline, health, community coexistence, and personal development. He affirmed that as a PAN member, he would support the resolution.
According to the resolution, this new body will ensure that the right to sport is not limited to occasional recreational practice but is consolidated as a permanent public policy. This policy will be oriented towards strengthening the city’s sporting vocation and its social impact.
The Secretariat of Sport will be responsible for matters related to the full exercise of the right to physical culture and sport for residents and visitors of Mexico City. It will promote physical activation and healthy lifestyle habits, as well as the comprehensive development of individuals through sports practice.
Furthermore, it seeks to foster community coexistence, social inclusion, and the development of sporting talents. It will also ensure universal, equitable, and quality access to sports activities in the capital, based on principles of equality, inclusion, social welfare, fair play, community participation, and human development.
