CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico (KINT) – The escalating presence and consumption of synthetic drugs in Ciudad Juárez have put specialists and civic organizations on high alert. This issue is claiming young lives and causing severe social and public health problems.
Current Situation in Ciudad Juárez
The consumption of substances such as fentanyl and crystal meth represents an increasing threat to the border community. Raúl Morales provides further details on this crisis in the following section.
Experts Warn of Dangerous Substance Consumption
Members of the FICOSEC Security and Justice Roundtable in Ciudad Juárez have warned about the growing consumption of highly addictive, low-cost, and easily accessible substances like fentanyl and crystal meth. They emphasize that a single dose can cause severe intoxication and even death.
Isabel Sánchez, a member of the Security Roundtable, stated: “It is dangerous for what happened with crystal meth to happen again, for fentanyl to start being consumed here, given that it is an opioid that causes death in a very short time. So, it is a concern for the roundtable.”
Increase in Synthetic Drug-Related Deaths
Concerns have arisen following the registration of cases of deaths related to the consumption of synthetic drugs or mixtures of different drugs. This situation highlights the need to strengthen awareness campaigns and protection for the youth of Juárez.
Ernesto Cornejo, also a member of the Security Roundtable, added: “It is because they want to enhance its effect, and also hook or capture the person who consumes it for the first time into drug dependence.”
Call to Action for Authorities
Given this scenario, an urgent call has been made to authorities at all three levels of government to strengthen prevention strategies, early detection, and addiction treatment, before the problem reaches even more alarming dimensions.
“We have to see it as a problem of addiction and health for those who consume, and not a problem of criminalizing them,” specialists emphasized.
Importance of Early Childhood Prevention
Finally, they stressed that drug prevention must begin at an early age, involving families, schools, and civil society organizations. This effort is key to protecting the youth of Ciudad Juárez.
