Mexico City, June 21 – The remains of an American-Mexican couple, reported missing since May 20, have been discovered in a mass grave near Mexico City. Judicial sources informed AFP that the bodies of Zafar Padamsee Mawani and Guillermo Jafett Hidalgo were found buried together in La Marquesa Natural Park, State of Mexico, along with two other bodies reportedly of Kenyan nationality.
Discovery and Identification
The couple, who resided in Chicago but had temporarily relocated to Mexico to care for Mawani’s mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, were last seen on May 20. The discovery was made by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office and the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday. Although official confirmation is pending, Spanish newspaper El País has reported the bodies belong to the missing Americans, citing an official source.
A relative of the couple expressed their grief on Facebook, stating, “It breaks my soul to know that their lives were taken in such a cruel way.” The relative had previously shared missing person flyers and photos of the victims.
Investigation Details and Suspected Circumstances
Local media reported that family members detected activity in the couple’s bank accounts after their disappearance. According to El País, one of the lines of investigation focuses on the vehicle the couple took to a contractor service in La Marquesa. The couple reportedly requested a ride-sharing taxi, but shortly after the journey began, they suspected something was amiss. One of their friends received a real-time location update of their journey as the couple grew suspicious of the driver’s behavior. This was the last contact their circle had with them.
The mass grave in La Marquesa Natural Park contained the bodies of Mawani and Hidalgo, along with two other individuals. La Jornada newspaper indicated that these two additional bodies are believed to be Kenyan nationals. The circumstances surrounding their deaths and the presence of other bodies in the grave are currently under investigation.
Broader Context of Violence in Mexico
This discovery adds to a concerning trend of violence in Mexico. In the last four days alone, approximately 56 bodies have been found in mass graves in northern Mexico. The incident also highlights the ongoing issue of missing persons in the country, with initiatives such as the “World Cup album” of victims sought by their families drawing attention to the crisis.
The case of the Rancho Izaguirre, a year after its macabre discovery as a place of “recruitment and extermination” for the CJNG cartel, further underscores the severe challenges related to organized crime and violence in Mexico.
Official Response and Ongoing Efforts
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the cause of death or potential suspects. The investigation is ongoing, with forensic teams working to identify the other bodies and gather more evidence. The Mexican authorities are facing increasing pressure to address the widespread issue of disappearances and violence.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has not yet commented on the case, but it is expected that they will be involved in assisting the families of the American victims and monitoring the investigation’s progress.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the expatriate community in Mexico and raised concerns among tourists and foreign residents about safety in certain areas.
Further updates are anticipated as the investigation progresses and more details become available from official sources.
