Mexico City, September 8 – In a move to bolster national talent and cultural diversity, the Mexico City Congress has formally requested that the city’s 16 boroughs prioritize the hiring of Mexican artists and groups for all artistic and cultural events held during the Fiestas Patrias. These celebrations, which take place throughout September, commemorate the start of Mexico’s Independence.
Legislative Approval for National Talent
During its ordinary session on Tuesday, the Legislative Plenary unanimously approved a proposal put forth by Deputy Gerardo Villanueva Albarrán. The initiative seeks to expand access to culture, provide robust support for Mexican artistic endeavors, ensure a more equitable distribution of public funds, and promote the rich tapestry of the country’s diverse cultural expressions.
Speaking from the rostrum, Villanueva Albarrán, a legislator from the Progressive Parliamentary Association for Transformation (APPT), underscored the profound significance of the Fiestas Patrias in Mexico’s public life. He noted that borough authorities typically organize civic ceremonies, artistic performances, and free concerts, allowing residents to celebrate within their own communities without the burden of ticket costs.
“Their intervention (the boroughs’) allows the population to celebrate within their own community and for the enjoyment of a show not to depend on the possibility of paying for a ticket,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of accessible cultural events.
The Impact of Publicly Funded Events
Villanueva Albarrán highlighted the massive public engagement in these events, citing that in September of the previous year, 280,000 people attended the Grito de Independencia ceremony in the Zócalo, while 90,000 gathered in the Coyoacán borough. “These figures demonstrate that publicly funded venues can showcase certain expressions to tens or hundreds of thousands of people. Deciding who occupies these spaces also determines who receives exposure and towards which sectors the spending allocated to these festivities is channeled,” he explained.
In this context, the Deputy stressed that the selection of performers for event programming should not be based solely on commercial recognition or the drawing power of a particular figure. “These elements can be part of the decision, but they must be accompanied by other criteria: the program’s relevance to the commemorated date, its contribution to cultural plurality, and the opportunities it generates for those who develop their artistic work in Mexico,” he asserted.
Villanueva Albarrán clarified that the purpose of his proposal is to ensure that the choice of artists, dancers, musicians, and groups aligns with the nature of the event. Furthermore, during the Independence commemoration, Mexican voices should occupy the main stages due to their artistic value, their ability to engage audiences, and their contribution to cultural diversity.
Celebrating Mexico’s Rich Cultural Heritage
He further elaborated on Mexico’s vast cultural wealth, which extends beyond a single national representation. He provided examples such as mariachi, sones, huapango, chilena, pirekua, jarana, marimba, and banda music. He also highlighted genres like trova, rock, pop, cumbia, jazz, rap, and electronic music, all of which are produced by talented national creators and groups.
The Deputy pointed out that in previous years, borough event lineups featured diverse shows. While some incorporated popular national groups and artists, others reserved prime slots for foreign performers, despite Mexico’s extensive and capable artistic offerings that could headline the patriotic festivities. “Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a permanent bridge between this Congress and Mexican musicians, so that the dissemination of talent is greater in all media,” the congressman concluded.
This legislative action aims to ensure that the Fiestas Patrias truly reflect and celebrate the vibrant and diverse artistic landscape of Mexico, providing a platform for national talent to shine and enriching the cultural experience for all citizens.
