Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua – The Undersecretariat of Human Development and Common Welfare Northern Zone has initiated comprehensive health brigades, dubbed “Cuidar nos une” (Caring Unites Us), across community centers in Ciudad Juárez. These brigades, which commenced yesterday and are scheduled to run until October 9, are primarily focused on suicide prevention, a growing concern in the region.
Alarming Suicide Rates Prompt Action
Austria Galindo, Undersecretary of Human Development and Common Welfare, highlighted the critical need for such initiatives, revealing an alarming suicide rate within the state. This year alone, 362 suicide cases have been recorded, with a significant 80 percent of these involving men aged 14 to 29. Galindo pointed to unemployment as a contributing factor to this distressing trend among young men.
In response, the brigades are offering psychological consultations and launching an informative campaign across social media platforms. Galindo anticipates that each brigade will attract an average of 200 visitors, who will also have access to awareness and suicide prevention workshops.
Brigade Schedule and Comprehensive Services
The health brigades are strategically scheduled across 11 community centers, ensuring broad reach within Ciudad Juárez. The detailed calendar is as follows:
- September 10: Riberas del Bravo
- September 11: 15 de Enero
- September 17: Revolución Mexicana
- September 18: Águilas de Zaragoza
- September 22: Mezquital
- September 23: Granjero
- September 24: Concordia
- September 30: Guadalupe, Distrito Bravos
- October 2: Parajes de San José
- October 7: El Parque Central
- October 9: Independencia II community center
Yameli Maldonado, coordinator of the community centers, further elaborated on the diverse range of services available. Beyond mental health support, the brigades will conduct nutritional and oral health assessments, with referrals to the MediChihuahua program as needed. Additionally, in collaboration with Ceredil, free eyeglasses will be provided. The initiative also extends to personal care services, including haircuts, nail care, and gelish applications, aiming to promote overall well-being.
Strengthening Suicide Prevention Efforts
Elizabeth Moreno, head of the Department of Human Development and Inclusion, emphasized the intensified focus on suicide prevention throughout this month. The brigades are actively disseminating information on detecting warning signs, accessing support lines and networks, identifying risk factors, and utilizing crisis hotlines. Individuals requiring further assistance are promptly referred to health centers and, based on their specific needs, connected with specialist medical attention.
This concerted effort by the Undersecretariat underscores a commitment to addressing the complex issue of suicide and fostering a healthier, more supportive community in Ciudad Juárez.
