MEXICO CITY, September 19 – Mexico City has officially commenced an extensive urban reforestation program, targeting the planting of up to 1.5 million trees by 2030. This monumental effort seeks to combat urban heat islands, increase green infrastructure, and improve the overall quality of life for its residents.
A Greener Future for Mexico City
The program, which began on August 19, 2026, with a ceremonial first planting in Canal de Tezontle, Iztacalco, prioritizes areas most affected by heat and a lack of green spaces. The ambitious goal includes planting approximately 200,000 trees annually, with an additional 500,000 trees potentially added through the participation of the city’s 16 boroughs, bringing the total to 1.5 million over five years.
“Where concrete seems to gain more and more ground, opening a space for a tree to grow is also a way to recover life,” stated officials during the program’s launch. The initiative aims to replace the city’s gray urban landscape with more trees, shade, and permeable soils capable of absorbing rainwater.
Targeting the Hottest Zones
The reforestation efforts will concentrate on boroughs with sparse vegetation and pronounced urban heat island effects. These include Iztacalco, Gustavo A. Madero, Venustiano Carranza, Iztapalapa, and Tláhuac. These areas often experience significantly higher temperatures due to the heat-absorbing properties of concrete and asphalt.
The program acknowledges the uneven distribution of green spaces across Mexico City. While some neighborhoods boast numerous parks and tree-lined streets, others are dominated by concrete, asphalt, and long stretches of sun-exposed pathways. By focusing on these underserved areas, the project aims to address this environmental inequality, ensuring that all residents have equitable access to shade and cooler environments.
Technical support from the World Resources Institute (WRI Mexico) will be crucial in identifying the most vulnerable zones. WRI Mexico’s methodology will help pinpoint urban heat islands, guiding planting efforts to maximize their benefits in reducing heat and improving local microclimates.
Beyond Planting: Ensuring Survival and Impact
The initiative goes beyond merely planting trees. It also involves removing sections of concrete from sidewalks and medians to create new planting sites and facilitate the infiltration of rainwater. This approach recognizes that the true impact of reforestation depends on factors such as canopy size, water availability, root space, and the reduction of impervious surfaces.
Authorities have announced that trees between one and two meters tall will be planted. Species selected for the program include liquidambar, cazahuate, colorín, guaje, guamúchil, palo verde, fresno, maculí, and ceiba. These species are chosen for their adaptability to urban environments, resistance to dry and rainy seasons, and their ability to benefit pollinators.
The 3-30-300 Rule: A Holistic Approach
The plan adopts the international 3-30-300 rule as a guiding principle. This rule suggests that every person should be able to see at least three trees from their home, that neighborhoods should achieve 30% tree canopy cover, and that a quality green area should be accessible within 300 meters of every household.
Achieving these goals requires more than just counting trees. A young tree provides minimal shade and needs several years to develop a substantial canopy. Therefore, the program’s success hinges on the growth and survival rates of the planted trees.
The initial years will be critical for the newly planted trees, requiring consistent watering, protection, proper pruning, and adequate space for root development. Incorrect species selection or planting in confined spaces can lead to damaged sidewalks, conflicts with utility lines, or premature tree mortality.
Schools and local communities are expected to participate in the care of some trees, but long-term technical monitoring will remain the responsibility of city authorities. The true measure of success will not be the number of trees planted, but their survival, canopy development, and their tangible contribution to reducing heat exposure for the population.
This program has the potential to significantly transform daily life in the city’s less vegetated neighborhoods. The ultimate success will be realized not when the 1.5 millionth tree is planted, but when these trees thrive, and residents can finally experience a cooler, less gray Mexico City.
