Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, September 22, 2026 – A fragmentation grenade and a suspicious device, described as a cell phone taped to an unknown object, were discovered abandoned in a public street in Ciudad Juárez on Tuesday. The discovery prompted a swift response from emergency services and military personnel, who secured the area and safely removed the explosive materials.
Explosive Device Found in Pradera de Los Álamos
The incident occurred in the Pradera de Los Álamos neighborhood, where authorities located the explosive. The Fire Department, via the 911 emergency line, received a report of an explosive device in a public thoroughfare. Upon arrival, the unit confirmed the presence of the device and immediately notified SEDENA (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional) to take charge of the scene.
“Upon arrival, we effectively detected a device there, for which immediate notice was given to SEDENA so that SEDENA could take charge of the scene. As first responders, we secured the perimeter,” stated a representative from the Fire Department.
The State Attorney General’s Office also arrived at the location to conduct relevant inspections, working in conjunction with SEDENA’s explosives team.
SEDENA’s Specialized Response
Experts from SEDENA secured the area and transported the grenade using specialized protective equipment. This marks the fourth explosive device recovered in Ciudad Juárez this year. SEDENA has intervened in and secured at least four explosive artifacts found in public spaces across the city.
Previous Incidents in Ciudad Juárez
Previous discoveries include an explosive found in April of this year in the Alborán neighborhood, located in the south of the city, which was abandoned in a vacant lot. Another incident involved the recovery of a mortar explosive in the Colinas de Juárez neighborhood. Additionally, a fragmentation grenade was secured on Boulevard Cuatro Siglos, in close proximity to the border wall.
These repeated findings highlight an ongoing concern regarding public safety and the presence of dangerous devices in urban areas of Ciudad Juárez. Authorities continue to investigate the origins of these explosives and the circumstances of their abandonment.
The rapid and coordinated response by local emergency services and SEDENA ensured the safety of residents and the successful removal of the hazardous materials.
