53 Club América Fans Detained in Mexico City Ahead of Concachampions Match

Mexico City, April 15, 2026 – A security operation in Mexico City resulted in the detention of 53 individuals identified as Club América supporters. The fans were en route to Estadio Azteca to attend the Concachampions 2026 match against Nashville.

Security Operation Leads to Mass Detentions

The group was intercepted while traveling on buses through the Iztacalco borough as part of a preventive measure initiated by the capital’s authorities. This action was part of the “Operativo Estadio Seguro” (Safe Stadium Operation), designed to prevent incidents before and during high-attendance sporting events.

During a review of the buses, elements of the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security discovered several high-risk items. Confiscated articles included pyrotechnics such as firecrackers and smoke bombs, as well as alcoholic beverages and products believed to be stolen.

Following the discovery, uniformed officers instructed the América supporters to disembark the vehicles and proceeded to detain all involved for further investigation. The 53 detained fans were then transferred to the facilities of the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, where their legal status will be determined. As of now, authorities have not specified whether all detainees will face formal charges or if some may be released after initial proceedings.

Enhanced Security at Estadio Azteca

In parallel, security was reinforced at the entrances to Estadio Azteca with review filters operated by the Auxiliary Police, aiming to prevent the entry of prohibited items. Additionally, the Undersecretariat of Traffic Control deployed a traffic operation on Calzada de Tlalpan and surrounding areas to streamline circulation and ensure the safety of attendees and local residents.

Club América’s Fan Base and Past Incidents

While Club América’s barras (fan groups) like “La Monumental” are not considered the most dangerous in Mexican football, they are known for their intense passion for the club, which has occasionally led to violent incidents and disturbances throughout its history. One of the most recent occurrences was in March of the previous year when América faced Juárez, resulting in altercations between fans in the stands of the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes.

Furthermore, in October 2025, following clashes between América and Pumas fans during the “Clásico Capitalino,” “La Monumental” and “Ritual del Kaos” were suspended. They also faced sanctions for disturbances caused during a game against Querétaro. In November 2025, what began as a peaceful serenade for América players near their concentration hotel escalated into a confrontation with Toluca fans.

The “Operativo Estadio Seguro” aims to mitigate such incidents and ensure a safer environment for all attendees at sporting events.
