KIO Data Centers to Invest $200 Million in Mexico by 2026, Eyeing Further $1.3 Billion Expansion

Mexico City, August 13, 2026 – KIO Data Centers announced yesterday that it will allocate more than $200 million towards new projects in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Querétaro by 2026. This significant investment aims to bolster its capacity in response to the escalating demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence, and mission-critical applications across the region.

The announcement was made in the presence of Mexico’s Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, who presented KIO Data with the ‘Hecho en México’ (Made in Mexico) distinction. During the event, KIO also confirmed the completion of phases two and three of its QRO2 project, bringing the total investment in its Querétaro Mega Campus to $170 million.

Ambitious Expansion Plans for QRO3 and Beyond

Looking ahead, KIO Data Centers is evaluating an additional investment of up to $1.3 billion by 2030 for the development of QRO3. This ambitious project is envisioned to have an approximate capacity of 100 megawatts, which, if realized, would establish it as the largest data center constructed by the company to date.

Since the integration of I Squared Capital as a shareholder in 2022, KIO has invested over $900 million across Mexico and Latin America, solidifying its digital infrastructure platform throughout the region. The company anticipates that its expansion strategy will generate more than 8,100 direct and indirect jobs by 2030, simultaneously strengthening production chains linked to digital infrastructure development.

Global Competition and Mexico’s Digital Future

Octavio Camarena, General Director of KIO Data Centers, emphasized the company’s competitive standing against global digital infrastructure operators, despite its Mexican origins. “We are committed to continuing investment to strengthen the technological capabilities Mexico needs to capitalize on the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and the digital economy,” Camarena stated.

Secretary Ebrard underscored the importance of fostering companies that enhance the nation’s technological, productive, and innovative capacities. He highlighted Querétaro’s prominent role, noting that the state hosts approximately 80 percent of Mexico’s data centers, a trend initiated by KIO’s establishment of the first such facility there over two decades ago.

Ebrard attributed the rapid expansion of data centers to the accelerating growth of artificial intelligence, which he described as the primary driver of global investment. He suggested that this phenomenon largely accounts for the recent economic growth in the United States and its imports.

“We are anticipating significant growth in everything related to information, the data economy, artificial intelligence, data centers, all the equipment for data centers, the entire ecosystem surrounding artificial intelligence will be the new significant economic growth, and Mexico will be a part of it, as in all of North America, along with the United States and Canada,” Ebrard affirmed.

The Secretary also explained that the ‘Hecho en México’ distinction has been awarded to just over 4,400 companies, serving as an accreditation of origin for goods and services in international markets. He added that this origin has become a decisive factor in global trade, surpassing the cost criterion that prevailed in recent decades.
