Mexico City has issued a heat alert for today, May 15, 2026, as temperatures are predicted to exceed 30 degrees Celsius. In addition to the scorching heat, isolated rainfall is expected in the evening, coinciding with planned marches that could lead to significant traffic disruptions across the city.

Heatwave Grips Mexico City

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has forecasted a heatwave affecting several Mexican states, including Mexico City. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to an anticyclonic circulation at mid-levels of the atmosphere, leading to elevated temperatures.

For Mexico City, the SMN predicts a hot day with temperatures ranging from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has activated a yellow alert for heat between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM in the following seven boroughs:

  • Benito Juárez
  • Coyoacán
  • Cuauhtémoc
  • Gustavo A. Madero (GAM)
  • Iztacalco
  • Iztapalapa
  • Venustiano Carranza

Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions against the high temperatures, such as staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak hours.

Rainfall Expected in the Evening

Despite the intense heat, the SGIRPC’s meteorological forecast indicates isolated rains for Mexico City tonight, starting at 9:00 PM. These showers are expected mainly in the southern parts of the city. While the rain might offer some relief from the heat, it could also contribute to traffic challenges, especially given the ongoing marches.

Hurricane Season Begins

Coinciding with these weather conditions, the 2026 hurricane season officially commenced today in Mexico. Authorities are closely monitoring developments, and N+ will provide continuous updates on any potential cyclonic activity in the Mexican Atlantic.

Traffic Disruptions Due to Marches

Today, May 15, is also marked by various marches and demonstrations across Mexico City, which are anticipated to cause significant traffic congestion. Commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and allow for extra travel time.
