Mexico City, September 20, 2026 – The Auxiliary Police of Mexico City responded to 12 cases of individuals attempting to take their own lives between January and August 2026. This figure, obtained from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) via a transparency request, already exceeds the eight cases recorded throughout 2025 and the two in 2024. In all three periods, interventions involved individuals located at various points across the capital, including bridges and other elevated structures.
SSC Interventions Highlight Ongoing Crisis
The 2026 registry does not yet include cases from September. However, on September 16 and 17, at least two interventions by SSC officers were reported in Iztapalapa and Álvaro Obregón. These incidents occurred after the cut-off for the 12 reported cases, and a new balance from the Auxiliary Police has not yet been released to incorporate them into an accumulated figure.
In one notable incident in Iztapalapa, a 25-year-old man was found on the cyclone fence of a bridge at the intersection of Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza and Ernesto Aguirre Street, in the San Lorenzo Xicoténcatl neighborhood. Operators from C2 Oriente alerted police, who, along with members of the Heroic Fire Department, safely removed him. The young man was subsequently placed under the care of a family member and advised to seek psychological and emotional support from health institutions.
Similarly, in Álvaro Obregón, capital police assisted a 39-year-old man who was on the top floor of a building located on Avenida Mina and Batuecas Street, in the Golondrinas Primera Ampliación neighborhood. Officers established communication with him and then secured him, preventing a fall from the third floor. Paramedics from Civil Protection evaluated him, noting lacerations on his shoulder and forearm and a possible state of intoxication. He did not require hospital transfer.
According to SSC records, the Miguel Alemán Viaduct and Eje 1 Norte Mosqueta are areas with the highest incidence of such interventions.
C5 Records Over 3,000 Suicide-Related Reports
The Auxiliary Police’s registry represents only a fraction of the emergencies handled by security forces. The C5 (Command, Control, Computing, Communications, and Citizen Contact Center) compiles a distinct set of data from calls and reports received through emergency services.
Between January 1 and September 1, 2026, the C5 recorded 3,391 suicide-related reports. Of these, 2,023 were for attempts, and 1,368 were calls from individuals expressing an intention to take their own lives. During the same period, the C5 registered 33 completed suicides. This is the accumulated figure reported by the emergency center up to September 1 and is not a definitive balance for all of 2026.
Reports of attempts also show a reduction compared to previous years. The C5 recorded 3,672 in 2023, 3,199 in 2024, and 3,051 in 2025. For the comparable period in 2026, there were 2,023, representing a 44.9% decrease compared to 2023. Calls from individuals expressing an intention to take their own lives decreased from 2,237 in 2023 to 2,231 in 2024 and 1,992 in 2025. For the corresponding period in 2026, there were 1,368, a 38.8% reduction compared to 2023.
Among the calls registered in 2026, 36.4% corresponded to individuals aged 21 to 30; 22.6% to those between 31 and 40; and 21% to the 11-20 age group. Regarding attempts, the C5 reported that 35.3% corresponded to the 21-30 age group, 23.9% to the 11-20 group, and 20.2% to the 31-40 group. The C5 also identified 8:00 PM as one of the periods with the highest concentration of reports.
Iztapalapa Leads in Historical Reports (2019-2025)
Historical data obtained through transparency requests indicate that Iztapalapa also holds the top position in requests for assistance related to suicide attempts over a broader period. Between 2019 and 2025, 16,538 requests for assistance were registered in Mexico City for various situations related to suicide attempts. Iztapalapa accounted for 2,984 of these, followed by Gustavo A. Madero with 1,998; Cuauhtémoc with 1,515; Álvaro Obregón with 1,267; Coyoacán with 1,265; and Tlalpan with 1,103.
These records encompass various emergency modalities, including self-harm, attempts from heights, and excessive consumption of pills or substances. Therefore, this database cannot be directly summed with the C5 records for 2026, nor does it represent a count of unique individuals.
The distinction between these databases allows for the separation of three types of data: the 12 interventions recorded by the Auxiliary Police between January and August; the reports received by the C5 through emergency services; and the accumulated requests for assistance between 2019 and 2025. As of September 20, there is no new public update from the SSC or C5 that would allow for an updated count of interventions or reports for the entirety of September. The two cases recorded on September 16 and 17 are post-statistical cut-off events and do not, by themselves, alter the official figures already published.
