Mexico City Gears Up for World’s Largest Football Class Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Mexico City, January 26 – As Mexico prepares to co-host its third FIFA World Cup in 2026, Mexico City is launching a series of initiatives to promote physical activity and sports. A highlight of these efforts is the upcoming attempt to host the world’s largest football class, aiming to break a Guinness World Record.

The massive football class is scheduled to take place on March 29th in the iconic Zócalo of Mexico City. This event follows a series of preparatory training sessions held across the city’s 16 boroughs, with the third such session recently concluding at the Monument to the Revolution.

Building Excitement: Preparatory Training Sessions

These preparatory sessions have been instrumental in building anticipation and engaging the community. Cristian, one of the participants, shared his enthusiasm: “My teacher invited me, and I said, ‘let’s go!’ You have to enjoy life, and so I came to try this experience here.”

Javier Hidalgo, head of the Pilares program in Mexico City, emphasized the profound cultural significance of football in Mexico. “It is a strong emotional bond, we see it, we hardly play it, what we want is for us to see it, play it, and practice it because it is a very complete, very fun sport,” Hidalgo stated, highlighting the program’s goal to encourage active participation in the sport.

Encouraging Youth Participation

Attendees at the training sessions also encouraged children, especially girls, to engage in football or any sport as a crucial part of their holistic development. Evelyn, another participant, urged: “May they fulfill their dreams and give it their all.”

Aiming for a Guinness World Record

The ambitious goal of Mexico City is to surpass the current Guinness World Record for the largest football class, which is presently held by the city of Seattle in the United States. This endeavor not only promotes sport but also places Mexico City on the global stage as a hub for major sporting events.

The event is expected to draw a significant crowd to the Zócalo, transforming the historic square into a vibrant field of play. The initiative underscores the city’s commitment to fostering a healthy and active lifestyle among its residents, leveraging the universal appeal of football.

Further details regarding registration and participation in the world’s largest football class are expected to be released by the Mexico City authorities in the coming weeks. This event is a key component of the city’s broader strategy to celebrate the upcoming World Cup and inspire a new generation of athletes.
