Mexico City, August 13 – Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, announced an historic renovation for the iconic La Merced Market and Plaza Merced 2000. The project aims to transform the area into a new ‘Utopia,’ bringing essential services closer to the surrounding community.
La Merced to Become a Priority Security Zone
During a tour of the public market, located in the Venustiano Carranza borough, Brugada Molina stated that La Merced will become a “priority zone” within Mexico City’s security strategy. She highlighted a vacant 17,000-square-meter space within the market that will be utilized for the new ‘Utopia.’
“We have the first floor, the ground floor, occupied; and we have 17,000 square meters vacant, for services for all the people who work, live, pass through, transit through La Merced,” Brugada said.
The capital’s leader proposed creating a market model that ensures peace. “Not only the 17,000 square meters that we are going to intervene for a Utopia, but the intervention of one of the La Merced markets, to transform it as a model of a public market in Mexico City. So, we will soon be announcing these strategies, these projects, that we have for the popular economic heart, which is La Merced,” she added, before touring the empty plot where the project will be built.
40 Million Pesos Invested in Electrical Upgrades
Following her tour, Brugada Molina announced a 40 million peso investment to replace the electrical system in the smaller nave of the La Merced Market. “This investment is prevention; this investment is to guarantee that public markets will function and function well. That is why we took up the proposal of the Board of Directors, and immediately instructed the Secretary of Public Works and Economic Development to launch this very important project for the La Merced market,” she affirmed.
She emphasized that over the past two years, the capital’s administration has allocated nearly 600 million pesos to support the city’s public markets.
